In vasca erano rimasti ancora alcuni sugarelli vivi.
A popular saying, often heard in the fishing world, tells us that “perseverance is the virtue of the strong,” but there are days when those words are truly put to the test. My latest outing, in the company of a few lads from Tuscany who share a genuine passion for our sea, was one of those adventures I will never forget.
The day got off to the worst possible start. Catching live bait proved to be a Herculean task: we struggled to find horse mackerel and mackerel for our hooks. Once out at sea, the hours dragged on as we painstakingly explored rocky ground and reefs, trolling live bait. Despite our relentless efforts, the sea seemed deserted. The fish simply weren’t feeding; it was almost as though they had vanished.
But anyone who spends time at sea knows that things can change when you least expect them to. On our way back, just as we were approaching the harbour entrance at Sant’Antioco, we decided to give it one last try. We still had a few live horse mackerel in the bait tank. I thought, “Perhaps we can tempt a sea bass or a bluefish before calling it a day.”
I lowered the bait into the water, never imagining that a giant would take the other end of the line. The strike was savage and immediate. An exhausting battle began: 25 kilograms of sheer power put both tackle and arms to the test. But after such a difficult day, determination won out.
Bringing this leerfish aboard was an indescribable thrill, the crowning moment of a day that had seemed ill-fated from the start. In the end, perseverance always pays off.
A special thank-you to my companions on this adventure—an exceptional bunch of lads with whom I shared this unforgettable experience. Sant’Antioco gave us a day that will stay in my angler’s heart forever.
Until next time,
Francesco Cossu
